Every food scored 0–100 on how well it supports weight loss — built from four things you can actually see: protein, fibre, calorie density and how processed it is. Search it, filter it, and tap any food to see exactly why it scored what it did.
How the Smart Food Score is calculated
No black box. Each food gets a 0–100 score from four weighted factors, all computed from the numbers shown on its row:
Fibre density (25%) — grams of fibre per 100 calories. Fibre slows digestion and keeps you full.
Calorie density (25%) — calories per 100 g, inverted. Foods with fewer calories per bite let you eat a satisfying volume of food on fewer calories.
Processing level (20%) — the NOVA classification, 1 (whole/minimally processed) to 4 (ultra-processed). Lower is better.
Tiers don’t overlap — every score falls in exactly one band: 80–100 Eat freely · 60–79 Everyday · 40–59 Portion aware · 20–39 Occasional · 0–19 Rarely.
Two deliberate rules. Foods with essentially no calories — water, black coffee, unsweetened tea — take full marks on protein and fibre density, because “grams per calorie” is meaningless when there are no calories to divide by and they add no caloric burden at all. Separately, ultra-processed foods (NOVA 4) are capped at 59 and can never reach the top two tiers, no matter how their numbers look. That’s why diet soda lands in “Portion aware” rather than alongside water: it’s calorie-free, but it isn’t food.
One important caveat. Because calorie density is weighted, nutritious but calorie-dense foods — olive oil, nuts, avocado — score lower than their health value suggests. They are good foods; they simply need smaller portions when you’re losing weight. Those foods are flagged individually.
Nutrition values are rounded approximations per 100 g of the food as commonly eaten, based on standard reference data. Use them for comparison, not for precise medical or dietary calculation.
Educational tool — not medical or dietary advice. A score is a general guide, not a recommendation for your body. Individual needs vary with medical conditions, medications, allergies and goals. ThinfastMD’s registered dietitians build plans around your actual situation.
